# Inshallah meaning.

The phrase you'll hear in almost every Muslim conversation about tomorrow: what it means, where it comes from, and how to say it the way it's meant.

**Inshallah (إن شاء الله) means "if Allah wills"**, or God willing. Muslims say it about anything they plan or hope to do in the future, following the Quran's instruction in Surah al-Kahf (18:23 to 24) never to promise something for tomorrow without adding "if Allah wills". It is also spelled **In sha Allah** or **Insha'Allah**.

## What Inshallah means, word by word

| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| إِنْ | in | if |
| شَاءَ | sha'a | (He) wills |
| اللَّهُ | Allah | Allah |

Put together: **if Allah wills**. It is a statement of faith that you can plan and work, but the outcome belongs to Allah.

## Why Muslims say Inshallah

The instruction comes from the Quran. In Surah al-Kahf, Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ: never say of anything, "I will do that tomorrow", without adding "if Allah wills" (18:23 to 24). Commentators explain that he had been asked about the young men of the cave and said he would answer the next day, without saying Inshallah, and the revelation was delayed.

A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari makes the same point through the story of Prophet Sulayman, who announced a plan without saying Inshallah and did not see it fulfilled. The lesson is humility: you are not in full control of tomorrow.

## How to use Inshallah correctly

- **For real plans:** "The nikah is in June, inshallah."
- **For hopes:** "Inshallah you'll feel better soon."
- **Not as a polite no.** Using Inshallah to dodge a commitment you have no intention of keeping empties the phrase of its meaning. If the answer is no, say no kindly.
- **Not about the past.** For something that has already happened, the phrase is [Mashallah](https://aswati.co/mashallah-meaning) or [Alhamdulillah](https://aswati.co/islamic-phrases).

## Inshallah in other languages

The phrase travelled with Islam: *Inshallah* in Urdu, Turkish (*İnşallah*), Persian, Malay and Indonesian (*Insya Allah*), and even into Spanish and Portuguese as *ojalá* and *oxalá*, from the Arabic *law sha'a Allah*. ## Frequently asked questions

### What does Inshallah mean?

Inshallah (إن شاء الله) means if Allah wills, or God willing. Muslims say it when they talk about something they intend to do in the future, because nothing happens unless Allah wills it.

### Is it Inshallah or In sha Allah?

Both are transliterations of the same three Arabic words: in (if), sha'a (He wills) and Allah. In sha Allah keeps the words apart, which some prefer because in Arabic writing the phrase as one word (انشاء الله) changes its meaning to 'the creation of Allah'. In English, Inshallah is the most common spelling.

### Where is Inshallah in the Quran?

Surah al-Kahf (18:23 to 24) tells the Prophet ﷺ not to say of anything 'I will do it tomorrow' without adding 'if Allah wills'. Commentators link it to the questions about the people of the cave, which he promised to answer the next day without saying Inshallah.

### Can non-Muslims say Inshallah?

Yes. It is widely used by Arabic speakers of every background, and saying it respectfully is a kind gesture. Just mean it as a real 'God willing', not as a polite way to say no.

### How do you reply to Inshallah?

There is no fixed reply. People often answer Inshallah back, or Ameen, or simply carry on the conversation.
