Jazakallah khair meaning.

The Islamic way to say thank you: what it means, the right form for a man, a woman or a group, and how to reply.

Jazakallahu khayran (جزاك الله خيراً) means "may Allah reward you with good". It is how Muslims say thank you, and the Prophet ﷺ described it as the most complete way of thanking someone (Tirmidhi). Say Jazaki to a woman and Jazakum to a group. Common replies are Wa iyyakum (and you too) and Barakallahu feek.

Why it's the best way to say thank you

When you thank someone with Jazakallahu khayran, you admit you can't fully repay their kindness yourself, so you ask the One who can. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever is done a favour and says Jazakallahu khayran to the one who did it has done his utmost in praising him (Tirmidhi). It is short, but it is a dua.

How to reply

  • Wa iyyak / wa iyyaki / wa iyyakum: and you (too).
  • Wa antum fa jazakumullahu khayran: and you, may Allah reward you with good.
  • Barakallahu feek: may Allah bless you.
  • Ameen: accepting the dua.

Other ways to thank someone

Barakallahu feek (may Allah bless you) works for thanks and congratulations. Shukran is the plain Arabic word for thank you. For more everyday phrases, see Islamic phrases and their meanings, and learn the difference between Inshallah and Mashallah.
