Nothing you type leaves your device. This is a guide, not a fatwa: ask a scholar you trust about your own situation.

Zakat is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth, paid once a lunar year has passed on wealth at or above the nisab. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Add your cash, savings, gold, silver, trading shares and business stock, subtract debts due now, and if the total reaches the nisab, divide it by 40.

How to calculate zakat, step by step

  1. Pick your zakat date. Zakat is yearly. Use the same Hijri date each year, the day your wealth first reached the nisab, or a date in Ramadan.
  2. Add up what you own on that day: cash, bank balances, gold and silver, shares you trade, business stock at selling price, and money owed to you that you expect back.
  3. Take away debts due now, such as bills, rent or instalments that are payable.
  4. Compare with the nisab. If the total is below it, no zakat is due this year.
  5. Pay 2.5%. For example, net zakatable wealth of 10,000 means zakat of 250.

Long-term shares, pensions and property held to rent have more detailed rulings. Ask a scholar or a zakat body you trust.

Who receives zakat

The Quran (9:60) names eight groups: the poor, the needy, those who administer zakat, those whose hearts are being brought together, freeing captives, people in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller. Most people pay through a mosque or a trusted charity that distributes to these groups, or directly to a person in need. Giving beyond zakat, such as sadaqah jariyah, keeps rewarding you long after.

Frequently asked questions

How is zakat calculated?

Add up your zakatable wealth (cash, bank balances, gold, silver, trading shares, business stock and money owed to you that you expect back), take away debts due now, and if the total is at or above the nisab and you have held it for a lunar year, pay 2.5% of it. That is one fortieth.

What is the nisab for zakat today?

The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. The calculator loads today's prices and works it out in your currency. Many scholars and charities recommend the silver nisab for cash and mixed savings because it is lower and so benefits more poor people; others use gold. Follow the view you trust.

Do I pay zakat on gold jewellery I wear?

Scholars differ. The Hanafi school says zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery even if worn. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say jewellery worn regularly in a normal amount is exempt. If you follow the Hanafi view, include it in the gold field.

Is zakat due on my house or car?

No. Your home, car, furniture, clothes and personal items are not zakatable. Property bought to sell on is trade stock, and rental income counts once it is saved in your account.

When should I pay zakat?

Zakat is due once a lunar year (hawl) has passed on wealth at or above the nisab. Many people pick a fixed Hijri date, often in Ramadan, and calculate everything they own on that day each year. The Hijri date converter can help you keep track.
