Which way is the Qibla from here? Use your location or pick a city to get the exact bearing to the Kaaba, then turn your phone into a Qibla compass.

Hold the phone flat, away from metal and magnets. If the needle jumps, move the phone in a figure-of-eight to calibrate.

The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, which Muslims face in prayer. The tool calculates it along the shortest path over the Earth (the great circle) as degrees clockwise from true north. For example, the Qibla is about 119° from London, 59° from New York, 268° from Karachi and 295° from Jakarta.

How to use a Qibla compass

  1. Tap Use my location, or choose the nearest city.
  2. On a phone, tap Start live compass and hold the phone flat.
  3. Turn slowly until the gold arrow points straight up and the page says you are facing the Qibla.
  4. No compass on your device? Use the degrees with any ordinary compass: 0° is north, 90° east, 180° south, 270° west.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the Qibla direction?

Tap Use my location (or choose your city) and the tool works out the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah as a compass bearing from true north. On a phone, tap Start live compass and turn until it says you are facing the Qibla.

Which way is the Qibla from the UK?

From London the Qibla is about 119° from true north, a little south of east (ESE). Birmingham and Manchester are very similar, around 118° to 120°.

Which way is the Qibla from the USA?

Along the shortest path over the globe, which is what most authorities and mosques use, the Qibla from North America is to the northeast: about 59° from New York and 49° from Chicago. Some older mosques face southeast using flat-map directions; follow your local mosque.

Is the phone compass accurate?

Phone compasses can be thrown off by metal, magnets and phone cases, and they read magnetic north, which can differ from true north by a few degrees depending on where you are. Calibrate by moving the phone in a figure-of-eight, and use a mosque or a known landmark to double-check.

What if I pray in the wrong direction by mistake?

Scholars agree that someone who made a sincere effort to find the Qibla and prayed, then learned they were off, does not need to repeat the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said that between east and west is a Qibla (Tirmidhi), which scholars apply to people far from Makkah facing its general direction.
