The Hijri calendar is the Islamic lunar calendar. It has 12 months of 29 or 30 days and counts its years from the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ in 622 CE. This page uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calculated calendar of Saudi Arabia, so the date shown can differ by a day from a country that starts its months by local moon sighting.
How the Hijri calendar works
Each month begins with the new crescent moon, so a month has 29 or 30 days and the year has about 354 days. Because of that, Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier through the Gregorian year: Ramadan 2027 begins around 8 February, and Ramadan 2028 around 28 January.
The calendar was adopted under the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, who chose the Hijrah as its starting point. Dates are written with AH, from the Latin anno Hegirae, "in the year of the Hijrah". For the meaning of every month, read our guide to the Islamic months, and for the year ahead see Islamic calendar 2027.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Hijri date today?
The date at the top of this page is today's Hijri date in the Umm al-Qura calendar, worked out live in your browser for your own time zone. Remember the Islamic day starts at sunset, so after Maghrib the Hijri date has already moved on by one.
Why is my country's Hijri date one day different?
Umm al-Qura is Saudi Arabia's official calculated calendar. Many countries and mosques start each month by sighting the new crescent locally, which can put them a day ahead or behind. For Ramadan and Eid, follow your local mosque or moon-sighting authority.
How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Pick the date in the Gregorian to Hijri box and the Hijri date appears straight away. To go the other way, enter a Hijri day, month and year in the Hijri to Gregorian box.
What year is it in the Hijri calendar?
It is 1448 AH until the Islamic New Year on or around 6 June 2027, when 1449 AH begins. The count starts from the Hijrah, the Prophet's ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
How many days are in a Hijri month?
Every Hijri month has 29 or 30 days, because each one follows a lunar cycle of about 29.5 days. A Hijri year is about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.
